Personality; The first time the player meets Jasmine, the Olivine Gym Leader, it is not when she is waiting for worthy challengers to face her in a Pokémon battle, but while she is caring for the ill Ampharos that powers her city's lighthouse. She is said to have stayed by its side and devoted herself to caring for it to such an extent that nothing even made her smile anymore.

While Jasmine is comfortable around Pokémon for long stretches of time, she is extremely shy and awkward around actual people. She has a low opinion of herself and yearns to become more 'vibrant'. Unfortunately, she is very self-conscious (entering the flamboyant world of Pokémon Super Contests was originally a struggle for her), and has a hesitant and occasionally formal speaking style with sentences that often drift off into nothing. In addition, she dresses overly plainly, to the amusement of her fellow Leaders Whitney and Erika. (Erika also teases her in a friendly manner about this habit, and Jasmine becomes quite flustered as a result.)

Both these aspects of her gentle personality cause the player's rival to label the Olivine Leader as 'weak'. However, Jasmine is shown to put on a different face when battling and carrying out her duties as Gym head. One of the Olivine trainers states that she hides her compassionate side under steely coldness, which is seen not in her external meek personality but the fact that she clearly compartmentalises her Pokémon battling life and her usual pursuits. She even speaks differently when in Leader mode - becoming hard as steel.

No doubt the impenetrable defense of Steel type Pokémon appealed to Jasmine. Though she puts herself down as not being as kind or skilled as the player, and modestly claims that there are still many stronger than her, she excitedly lauds the Pokémon type she has chosen as being cold, sharp and not easily defeated. She used to train the Rock type, but switched her entire arsenal and theme to become stronger. That, in itself, is evidence that Jasmine is not as weak as she claims. As well as her unacknowledged selflessness, she is Gym Leader for a reason - indeed, when one rebattles her, her Steelix has the highest level of any of the sixteen Johto/Kanto Gym Leaders' Pokémon.

She becomes more open and friendly when the player approaches her for her phone number and future battles. And as a Gym Leader, Jasmine is beloved by those who know her well, but she shies away from other people due to her anxiety - until, of course, she gets serious. In her element, Jasmine truly approaches her goal: to become as strong and untroubled as the Steel she trains.

[ It switches off briefly. A few seconds later, a young woman in simple, demure clothing comes into focus, now looking more composed. ]

[ Her gaze drops. She's finished her prepared speech, and looks unsure what to say next. ]

Er...that is...I'm getting rather worried. I only have Rusty with me right now.

[ A W K W A R D pause. ] And, um, my name is Jasmine. A Gym Leader. By the way. Thank you.

[ The last words are cold and stilted, and she almost cringes at the change in herself. Way to make an impression! Standing up straight again, she shuts off the feed quickly. ]
